Helping children through separation and divorce

Age-appropriate conversations, steady routines and ways to support children without placing them in the middle.

Children may respond to a separation in different ways. The most useful starting point is often to make space for their feelings while keeping everyday life as predictable as possible.

Explain changes in simple terms

Where possible and safe, give children a clear, age-appropriate explanation of what will change and what will stay the same. Avoid details of adult disputes. Children may have questions over time, not just during one conversation.

Reassure children that they can care about both parents and do not need to solve adult problems.

Keep routines where possible

  • Maintain familiar school, sleep, meal and activity routines when practical.
  • Let schools or childcare providers know about relevant changes so they can offer appropriate support.
  • Listen to a child’s worries without immediately trying to correct the feeling.
  • Avoid discussing legal or financial disagreements in front of children.

Think about practical coordination

Keep a simple record of school calendars, medical appointments, transport arrangements, essential contacts and regular expenses. If arrangements are disputed or you are unsure about obligations, obtain qualified local advice instead of relying on a generic worksheet.

Reach out when children need more support

Persistent changes in sleep, school participation, mood or relationships can be a reason to speak to a qualified child-health or mental-health professional. A trusted school counsellor or clinician can advise on appropriate next steps.
